The Muddled EHR landscape

There is a good roundup of issues confronting/thwarting attempts to have Open Source, interoperable, etc. Electronic Health Records over at LinuxMedNews today. Where, oh where, will that $19 billion dollars go?

So what is the status of VistA, the Veterans EHR that was open sourced in, what, 2001?

Wouldn’t an already used by the government, free, and tested EHR software get some priority?

To reply #2. God help us if they do. Yes, WalmMrt runs pharmacies and understands that business - which is pretty cut and dried, procedurally. The nuances of actual clinical work flows is a bit out of their league. The history of EHR-deinstallations is a testimony to EHRs that were built outside the clinical process. Don’t even get me started on the proprietary nature of this plan, either. I think it’s time folks start lobbying congress to make it illegal to put health records in a proprietary format.
