This was originally posted to the LULA list. Anyone on this list
involved with a group in which Ms. Shaffer could speak? Anyone have a
venue which might be used to organize an event?

Hi,
I am the Director of Development for the Open Voting Consortium
and I am coming to southern California to speak about election reform at
two events in San Diego, one organized by Activist San Diego June 18th
and one organized by Common Cause June 24th.
Instead of coming back up to my home in northern California, I am
thinking about staying in the LA/San Diego area and connecting with
other political groups while I'm down there.
I am looking for groups I could either come and speak to during their
group meeting (I can speak anywhere from 10-45 minutes), groups that
might be interested in hosting an election reform event that I could
speak at, or individuals who might be interested in having a small house
party with their friends to learn more about the election reform
movement and open voting.
I know other election reform activists in the area who would be
interested and avaialble to speak if you want to make it a larger event
(Brad Friedman from the Velvet Revolution, Robert Cohen- producer of
Votergate, Penny Little- producer of Electile Dysfunction, etc). I
also have access to many movies about election reform (Votergate,
Electile Dysfunction, Call it Democracy, Invisible Ballots, A Little
Light Will Do Ya, etc).
In addition, I have a power point presentation I made about the Open
Voting Consortium and a news clip that shows the demonstration we did of
the open voting system last year.
If that all sounds too complicated, we could just have a smaller event
where I could speak anywhere from 10-45 minutes and then do a question
and answer session or I can just make a short speech during a regular
group meeting. I have done this for many Democracy for America groups,
Green Party Chapters, and Democratic Clubs in the northern California
area (Northern County Democratic Club, Santa Cruz Democracy for America,
Santa Clara Green Party Chapter, etc). Please let me know if your group
or any group you know would be interested in having me. The specific
dates I am available are (Monday-Thursday) June 20-23 and (Sunday) June
26th.
Here is my bio: Lara Shaffer is the Director of Development for the Open
Voting Consortium. She organizes events, speaks to political groups, and
appears on radio and television shows to educate the public about the
problems with the current election system and the need for an open
voting system. She also coordinates volunteers and activists to work
towards bringing an open voting system to California. Before the 2004
General Election, she worked with America Coming Together to register
people to vote and increase voter turnout in St. Louis, Missouri. Ms.
Shaffer received her B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis,
Missouri and is now living in northern California.
Thank you, I look forward to hearing back from you,
Lara Shaffer :)
