I'm a new person, so my "vote" shouldn't really count. I'll do my best
to make the meeting if it is indeed held on Sunday May 29th, but it
won't hurt my feeling one bit if I don't have t make the decision, and
it is put off until June 26th.
The curriculum for the tutorial classes is very similar to the I the
distance learning Linux SysAdmin course I'm taking that O'Reilly
"sponsors"-- http://oreilly.useractive.com/courses/sysadmin.php3
--which is WAY too expensive for what a person gets.
While the course has the good feature of an online "sandbox" server
where one can experiment, and guidance to do so, the course material
itself is so-so--not bad, just not what it could, and some day will,
be. I think every thing could be better obtained by tutorials such as
the one LinuxChixLA is doing, other free online material, a few books,
subscription to some of the user group mailing lists for "live" help.
The SMC course Sharon has mentioned sounds pretty good as well. So,
lot's of local/internet resources, and I don't see anything in the
expensive that isn't easily available--there's nothing special there.
BUT Wait! In addition to everything else, on completion the loyal
student gets a very nice certificate from the University of Illinois
and CEU's for those who can make use of them, or for whom they are
required. On the other hand, our now living-below-the-poverty-line
student might just as well take publicly available tests and get Linux
Certification, which might be even more useful than the above touted
Certificate.
So I'm looking forward to the LinuxChix sessions on SysAdmin.....not to
mention moving on to actual applications. I've just seen OpenOffice for
the first time, and it looks wonderful!
