I know that there is at least one Gentoo fan in the group (you know who
you are ... Stephanie :)
And also for anyone else who is interested in the uber geek distro of
the moment ;)

USCLUG -- APRIL MEETING
******************************
Topic: The Gentoo Portage System
Speaker: Tyler McHenry
Date & Time: April 28, 2005, 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Location: USC, THH 201
Cost: Free to members and general public
Topic Summary: Portage is the backbone package management system of the
Gentoo Linux distribution, though it can actually be used in conjunction
with *any* Linux or Unix-like system, including OSX. Portage compiles
all software from source using user-defined optimizations and settings.
The philosophy of Portage is to create a system that is exactly what you
want, as up-to-date as possible, and optimized specifically for the
particular computer that you are using.
This presentation will address how to use portage, how to customize it
and how its internals work.
Tyler McHenry:
Tyler is the current president of the USC Linux User group and a
computer science major at USC. He has been using Linux for six years and
Gentoo specifically for three years (since version 1.2). He is employed
at the Information Sciences Institute working with Linux on embedded
network systems.

>From the 110 Southbound
Exit Adams
Go straight, you'll hit Figueroa, take a right (south)
Pass Adams
Pass Jefferson and turn right into Gate 3 Park in the parking structure
to the left, there is a $6 charge
After you park
Once you've parked exit the parking structure the way you came in, and
turn left (i.e. away from the gate). Walk along the path and you'll be
walking toward three buildings. The one slightly to the left of the end
of the path is VKC, it has red brick, and a tall tower on top of the
building with a large golden globe on the top of the tower. On the right
of VKC is SOS, it's very short, and to the right of that is a very tall
building. Right behind these buildings is THH (Taper Hall of
Humanities). This is the building you want. It's very long, and
L-shaped. Towards the right is an overhang and some glass doors, go in
there and follow the signs to the correct room. Rooms beginning with 1
are on ground level, rooms beginning with 2 are upstairs.
