                   UUASC-LA
Unix Users Association of Southern California
          Los Angeles County Chapter
               July 2004 Meeting
---------------------------------------------
                Snort and Acid
---------------------------------------------
           Thursday, July 1, 7-9 pm
            Sun Microsystems, Inc.
222 N. Sepulveda in El Segundo
         10th Floor -- Martinique Room
---------------------------------------------
NOTE: This July the meeting will meet on the usual first Thursday of
the
month, as we kick off the big Fourth of July weekend early this year by
celebrating with a little Snort and Acid.
Don't tell your kids this, but using Snort and Acid together can
actually be a
good thing. When combined, the two open source network intrusion
detection
system products provide a web-based GUI front end for an engine that
searches
and processes a database of security events, and can perform real-time
traffic
analysis and packet logging on IP networks.
At the July meeting of UUASC-LA, as advertised at http://la.uuasc.org ,
senior
admin Nick Bernstein who serves as a constant source of assistance on
the
UUASC email list will speak for the first time to the LA Chapter by
showing us
how to set up what is becoming a standard approach in the IT field to
knowing
who and what is potentially attacking networks.
Nick will demonstrate the software programs in action for us, and time
permitting he will even perform an installation and configuration of
both.
And, as an added bonus, Nick is generously offering some free CDs with
Snort,
Acid, MySQL, and other possible goodies as either a give-away for all
attendees, or as part of a raffle, depending on how many people show up.
Nick works at Document Systems Inc., and offers Information Security
Consulting (viewpoint-security.com) specializing in vulnerability
assessments,
security policies, and secure network design.
Just look at what the critics are saying about our meetings:
"Continue attending UUASC events ... the accumulated knowledge goes
far," says
Peter Benjamin, a long-time user group activist who considers UUASC
amongst
the best of all the groups he has ever encountered.
After the meeting, you are invited to mingle with many of the chapter
members
at UUASC-LA's favorite dining and drinking spot. Details will be
presented at
the meeting.
WARNING: People may take photographs of UUASC-LA meetings and social
events.
If someone is absolutely opposed to having his or her photograph taken,
that
person needs to please speak with the photographer.
Warning to photographers: You must have a person's permission to post
photographs in any public manner.

           --------------------------------------------------
UUASC is for all persons using UNIX either personally or professionally,
or
interested in learning more about UNIX. We recognize all varieties of
UNIX,
including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, HP/UX, and
BSD.
This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden
your
skills and knowledge.
There are two UUASC chapters serving Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
Meeting
locations for each chapter are detailed at our web site,
http://www.uuasc.org.
Please visit our web site.
There are no dues or other membership requirements. More than 200
persons
receive our monthly meeting announcements. Meeting attendance varies to
as
high as 75. Hershel Remer serves as UUASC president and leads a team of
volunteers who together manage the club. More volunteers are always
needed.
Los Angeles County Chapter meetings are normally held the first Thursday
of
each month from 7 to 9 pm ( or whenever we feel like stopping ).
Generally,
meetings include a technical presentation on a hardware or software
topic of
current interest to the UNIX community and a round-table discussion of
current
topics of interest to the group. UUASC-LA needs future topic suggestions
(and
volunteers)!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This list is for announcements only. Send all discussion to the regular
UUASC list. For details, send message "info UUASC" to
Majordomo at UUASC.org.
