Sorry you missed it :(
Ray was there with the camera, tho I don't know if he was planning on
putting an archive on the web.
It's hard to put together a point by point on each distribution
presented, but for what it's worth here are my impressions of what I
heard as filtered through what needs I'm trying to fill.
*** Fedora
I'm not touching Fedora. They are planning on 2-3 releases a year, with
each release marking the end of support for the previous release. I am
NOT going to reinstall 2-3 time a year. I don't like that much change in
my life :)
*** Mandrake
This looks like a viable candidate. I installed on to my laptop last
night and there is a lot that I like ... and it Just Works (tm) I've yet
to investigate software installation so we'll see how that goes. One
nice thing mentioned was that when you use the Mandrake verion of rpms
the dependency issues seems to have been resolved. Having been stuck in
dependency hell more than once, this was a welcome improvement. I also
liked that when installing via urpmi (the Mandrake cli rpm installer) is
that the menus across all desktops and window managers are unified,
i.e., each software installed will be in the same place in the menu
structure on KDE, Gnome, or any of the windown managers. Quite a nice
touch. There is some concern on Mandrake's financial future. They are in
Chapter 11 and reorganizing. So for now, it's installed and I'm trying
out.
*** Suse
The Suse presenter was a last minute addition and he had only installed
a few months ago. Suse has a very good reputation, and with the purchase
by Novell this might be a distribution to watch. The general consensus
was that the first true Novell branded Suse wouldn't really be seen
until Suse 10, and that this might give a clearer idea on where
Novell/Suse is headed.
*** Gentoo
I'm not such a geek girl that I plan on using Gentoo. I'm not the
compiling type :)
*** Debian
There was a last minute switch in the Debian speaker, and he didn't have
that much time to prepare. He spoke of the Debian commitment to free
software ideals (which is also part of the Gentoo distribution), and the
famed package manager apt-get. This is a distribution that I have always
wanted to install and try, but I always failed as actual installation.
Third attempt last night also failed. The problems were that I don't
know hardware well enough to respond correctly to all the installation
questions. And I was concerned that Woody (the current stable branch of
Debian) uses the 2.2 kernel and the ext2 file system ... both of which
are quite old. These are things which are, I think, easily upgradable
... so I may wait until the next installfest for additional help and try
again.
Well, in a nutshell, there are my impressions. Betty was there too,
maybe she'll have additional information to add. Should I see an edited
video somewhere on the LPBN I'll post to the list.
